Steel players on the outside - looking in here!!

Post by Bob Mainwaring »

I don't know if this subject has ever been presented before or not, but here goes.

Just wondering after talking to a few steel playing buddies, how many interested steel players are out there with access to a computor not being counted i.e. not registered here on the forum?

I know from my own experience with this forum, all I wanted to do was to be a part, not necessarily big, but to throw an oar in so to speak just now and again.

I've learned one heck of a lot from wandering about the different topics that appear constantly and have gained friends worlwide plus picked up a couple of contacts which enabled me to better (I think) myself with obtaining goodies like instruments and items for sale.

Why couldn't there be a move afoot whatever way possible to get those players out there to tell their stories - maybe with Decals/Transfers how's about it b0b???

I wager a bet that the "viewing " audience of this forum is double the membership,
then again, I have no way of telling, just a subjective gut feeling, I lurked here for 6 months before I got off my lazy $#@ and registered. !!! Scott

b0b could install webtrends and tell the "PageHit" count of visitors unregistered, but that software is pricey, I bought a copy for my servers at work.

I'm one of the observers that spend a lot more time reading than talking. Everything I know about the steel I learned from the forum, including how to tune it. This forum us truly invaluable for us newbies. Some of us don't talk much, but we do a lot of listening.

Thanks

I figure that the great majority of steel players out there are not online. I know of about 15-20 steel players here in Quebec, and I've only seen postings from a couple. Also the majority of people here are french speaking, so there is probably a language barrier. It would be my pleasure to help out anybody who wants to post something, but is having trouble with the language.

Over half the steelers I know don't participate in the FORUM. Most of them have a computer (or at least access to one). I've talked with them about it, and I won't go into their reasons for "abstaining" here on the FORUM. But, I do understand and respect their feelings and concerns.

As for myself, I enjoy it most of the time.

A lot of people are still "computer-phobic" And maybe they are afraid of putting their foot in their mouth. Hey, everybody is ignorant about something. Jump in and ask. Someone on this forum will know the answer and help out. Or at least they'll act like they know the answer Image This is the greatest site on the net, bar none. Image

I know one for sure who doesn't post on the Forum. I always considered myself a passable steel player but the band I'm in now I'm playing lead guitar 'cause we have a better steelman. His name is Larry Sutphin who's probably the premier player in the southern Virginia area (He's the first call session player around here) Larry comments to me from time to time about things he's seen on the Forum as he surfs it all the time but never posts! He's a webmaster and created a website for the "Steel Guitarists of Hampton Roads". If you'd like to learn about him just ask me or go to the site which is: www.evertize.com/sutphin and you'll see the dude. He's known as my "older brother". He's independly wealthy and goes on vacation a lot so when he does I get to move to the steel chair (I'm always sending him travel brochures)!!!!!
