Bobby Green, Pedal Steel Player

Post by Michael Dan Ehmig »

In 1970 and '71 I played in the Florida State prison system with a pedal steel player named Bobby Green. He was the most incredible musician I have ever worked with. We were in the prison band at Sumpter corrections in Sumpter county. Anybody know anything about Bobby? He was given an Emerald Green double neck Sho Bud steel when he walked through the gates. He played mandoline and fiddle and banjo but was absolutely other-worldly on the steel. Anybody know him, hear of him or if he's still out there please let me know. Michael Dan Ehmig (Just got a my first pedal steel two weeks ago. A push-pull double neck Marlen. It was a gift. Made in 1971 I think.) I'm excited. MDE

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION ABOUT BOBBY GREEN, HE PASSED AWAY ABOUT 8 OR 9 YEARS AGO. HE WAS SOBER AND JUST FINISHED WORKING OUT ON HIS "BICYCLE" AND COLLAPSED WITH HEART ATTACK. YES, HE WAS A GREAT MUSICIAN AND FRIEND. LONNIE PORTWOOD

We have a Bobby Green here in the Fort Worth area. I gather he's not the one you're looking for?

I moved this topic from 'Pedal Steel' to 'Steel Players', so that people will be able to find it in the logical place when they search.

Michael,
Bobby was a good friend of Shot Jackson and was one of many that Shot tried to help. There's no tellin how many steels Shot gave Bobby... I met Bobby through Shot in his store in Nashville and Bobby while I were both living in Fla.. He in Jacksonville and I was in Taylor county. Bobby was working in a music store in Jax and I went to see him a few times. He was a very talented man and an enjoyable person. I hated to hear of his passing. Thanks for reminding me of a
"pleasant memory!" regards, fred

I thought this was the Bobby Green that I met in about 76 at Sho-Bud, he was working for Shot at the time, I went with him to a gig, close to the store, & when we got there, he had no bar, we went over to Demons Den on the corner, & he grabbed a very long bar, off of Julian Thorpe's guitar & told the club owner that he'd have it back in time for Julians gig, Sorry to hear of his passing! au

Thanks to all of you who posted a response. I was beginning to think this amazing human had gone un-noticed. He was a real master and it's great to hear he had straightened out before he passed. Peace MDE
