The real book
Who has the real book that some have talked about in other threads? Who does it?

OK, I checked this out at Sher Music's website. To those of us who bought it years ago, it was just called "The Real Book" at the time. Apparently it's been "corrected and updated", but as far as I can tell "The New Real Book -Vol I" is the one that has replaced the original one. Vol's II and III also have a lot of standards in them, so the best thing is to go to the Sher Music website and review the titles and decide which one(s) you want to buy based on the titles.

I still think they're two different things.
"The Real Book" was always an illegal (uncopyrighted) book, which nonetheless seemed to be everywhere. They can only be bought under the counter in the Nudge-Nudge-Wink-Wink section of your local music store
The New Real Book(s) are legal, and contain different (and more modern) material.
I could be wrong though, it happened once before! Anyone else ? Jerry Gleason ?
Jim, really looking forward to seeing you in Dallas. That $2 Canadian coin I gave you is worth about $1.25 now... but I'm comin' anyway!

p.s. and I know this is straying from the topic, but I still say the Hal Leonard Series "Ultimate Jazz Fake Book" is far-and-away the best. If I could only own one fake book, this'd be it ! - J

They are indeed two different animals. The REAL (illegal) real book is usually what people are talking about when they say "the real book".
That being said, Sher's "New Real Book" is a very very good fakebook. Many of the chord change mistakes in the illegal real book (and there are tons of mistakes in it) have been corrected in the New Real Book.

We used to call it the fake book. Here is what I got about 30 or 40 years ago.
Library of Musicians Songs-Volume 1 (standards) for all C instruments.
It says:
( This collection of popular music has been compiled to furnish a compact library of the most requested songs for professional musicians and is not intended for sale to the general public.)
It has 369 pages of words, music lead line and guitar chords. I never counted them but there must be over 1000 show tunes, old standards, jazz, big band, etc.
The other Book I have-
"over 1000 favorite standard songs. Volume 2.
I have checked out the chords in many of these and most of the time they are correct basic chords.
Although all the jazz ,subsitute ,alternative chords, that we can use nowdays, are not in them.
I might sell them as I have no more need of them. I have memorized a lot of them...al
