Going to Denver

Post by Pete Ballard »

I'll be in the Denver / Colorado Springs area this weekend (Feb 1-4). I've never been there and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on things to do (live shows, guitar shops, record stores, ...)

I will be playing steel with Leo Everett at Lulu's lounge in Watkins, CO on Fri and Sat. This is about 10 miles east of Denver. Leo does a legit country-style of music and has an excellent band (I am playing in place of his piano for this week). I'll email you my cell phone and if you get to Denver and don't mind a 20 minute ride from Denver, call me and I'll give you dorections.

Pete, Welcome to Denver.....
Check out Dick Meis at Chris' Music Exchange,
65th and Federal (just North of downtown Denver).
Leroy, I need to see your map "...Watkins 10 miles east of Denver". I'll "fill" my tank for that 10 mile trip and try to see you this weekend.

You might want to try to contact Dick Meis, email dmeis@dickmeis.com, to see if he is playing anywhere this weekend. I had a great trip to Denver a couple weeks ago, thanks in part to great music Friday & Saturday night. Dick swaps seamlessly between his Mullen and his Strat while seated and plays steel with a flatpick and two finger picks. Not your ordinary picker.

Yeah Aaron, Dick is well worth meeting. I've know him for 25 years and am always astounded at what hs does with that flat pick and two finger picks. He always attends the major shows and usually has his own booth--you can also look him up there.

Allen, I am email my "map" :-) Hope to see you.

Wow. Thanks everyone. It looks like there's a lot to do out there. I have a feeling that I'm gonna like Denver so much that I'm not gonna want to come back home (then again, that's not saying much - look where my home is). Image

Leroy - I'm definitely gonna try to check out Lulu's. I'll call you if I need directions, but I'll be with people familiar with the area so we should be able to find it.

As soon as I finish this post I'm gonna send an email to Dick Meis. It sounds like he's the man to see.

Red - thanks for the Wax Trax tip. The first thing I do when I'm in a new town, is find the cool record stores.

If Dick is still playing with Denver Joe, you might want to check that out. I saw then a couple years ago. I really enjoyed Dick's playing and Denver Joe was hilarious.

Dick and lois are doing 3-piece a lot around
Denver and I don't believe he does much work with Denver Joe anymore. But it would be worth the effort to double check.

Contact Chuck Lettes ("Cool Blue Steel" on the Vibrato label)who lives in Denver. You saw him play in St.Louis the last 2 years. You'll see him in Dallas in March! John Macy(moved to Colorado from Mass. with Michael Martin Murphy!!) and Brian Ercek are 2 other major steel players in Denver. I believe Chuck is playing steel for Lannie Garrett doing her "Patsy DeCline" show at the Buffalo Exchange restaurant on Lincoln Avenue near to downtown Denver. Email Chuck at: CLettes@lps.k12.co.us
