Sixth String - Plain or Wound ?

Post by Bob Farlow »

I'm quite sure the majority of E9th players use a plain string for their G# sixth string, but for those who use a wound string, it may be advantageous to try a BR22 from GHS. This string has a nickel and iron composition and has been microground to a very smooth finish.I switched to this string about five years ago, and am well pleased at its brighter sound and smooth feel. Your mileage may vary.

Yes, I lower the sixth string ½ tone with a vertical knee lever.

I want to think I remember another thread where someone stated that none of the great players use a wound .022 on their guitar. I believe I am correct in stating that Lloyd Green uses a .022 wound so he would be an exception to that statement. I don't think an exception could get much bigger than that! Image

Yea Mike, you are right about Lloyd. I don't consider myself to be in the same class as "the big G", but it is comforting to know someone of his stature also thinks the wound sixth is the way to go. I wish Mr. Green would elaborate his thoughts on this matter. How else can we know the truth? Image
