What about India?

Post by bob grossman »

Kind of off-the-wall, but does anyone know of any steel players in India?

I'm not a biologist, but have been interested in venomous snakes - yes, snakes -since early childhood. I have an email acquaintance there that sends me photos from time to time. I told him I'd see what comes up on the forum. India probably isn't a haven for country music.

I don't know about pedal steel, but there is a long tradition there of playing stringed instruments with a slide. I'm sure there are others here much more knowledgable about this than I am. I do know of a great musician named V.M. Bhatt; he plays what is called a "Mohan Vina", a sort of hybrid acoustic lap steel, with 3 melody strings, 5 drone srings, and 12 "sympathetic" strings. He's recorded a lot, including a series of amazing duet albums on the Water Lily Acoustics label; one with Ry Cooder ("A Meeting by the River") and one with Jerry Douglas, among others.
[This message was edited by Pete Finney on 03 February 2002 at 12:20 PM.]
