Wish Jeff Newman would do a new "listening" CD.

I wish he'd cut a new studio CD or two and release 'em so we can have some music to enjoy by this great player. His playing is beautiful.

Hey Harry,
I second the motion about a new album from Jeff. He's a world class player for sure. Sometimes I think he's overlooked by a lot of steel guitar players who regard him as just an instructor. I remember when I went to Scotty's in '98 I was hanging with an old Calif. friend of mine who played fiddle and guitar. He and I would watch most of the players for a tune or two and then we'd get up and get a drink or wander around a bit. When Jeff came on we sat down and he played a couple of songs. I said to my bud "Hey man, lets get a brew and check out the displays a little" He said, "Go ahead, I'm going to sit here a while, I really like this guy". So I sat back down and really am not sorry I did. Jeff played his butt off and showed what a great professional he is!

I consider Jeff a personal Mentor and, I can't say any more than you guys have about his playing but I do want to say that, his knowledge of the guitar is equal to his playing ability. When he gives you an answer to a quesiton about music or the guitar, you can bank on that answer. He is the most knowledgable of the guitar of anyone I've ever met.

Been to his Top Gun School and am going back again. He's the best in the business IMHO. Taking another course in Dallas at the show. He gave me some stuff he'd recorded after the Top Gun Class. It's better than anything I've ever heard from any player. Oh yeah, he's a hell of a nice guy too. And Fran is top notch. GREAT PEOPLE.

Any idea what Jeff's course in Dallas will contain?

Going to Jeff's first advanced /teacher's class back in '75 did more for my playing than probably anything else I could have done. I'm sure he will go down in Steel History as one of the greatest mentors and influences for MANY players. I agree I'd love to see some new CD material so he'd get deserved recognition as the master player he his. C'mon Jeff!!

One of my favorite albums is the 'Slidin Smoke' record that Jeff did with Mike Auldridge on Flying Fish. Great mix of uptempo bluegrass, slow country, and true blues.

I told Jeff he should cut another record and he said it was too much of "a ego trip"...
Wish he'd reconsider.

Jeff's on the latest Jim&Jesse album, so I guess that'll have to do for now.

It is the quintessential paradox that if someone becomes recognized as a great teacher we often forget he is a great practitioner of his craft;in Jeff's case his unique playing. When people ask me to play them a version of Steel Guitar Rag I reach for Jeff's 1976 record A Few Good Friends because he takes the song to a new place and those triplets at the end are truly awesome....Pete

Jim

Talked with Newman yesterday and he said it was along the lines of playing the melody. That I desperatly need being a green player of about 18 mos. Played 6-string all my life but this thing is another world.
keep it "PLUMB COUNTRY"

Thanks Jeff. Image When I started playing 30 years ago, playing the melody first (and correctly) was drilled into me permanently. I was kind of hoping for some Universal type instruction, but I guess that wouldn't be general enough for a one day teaching seminar. Image

His first CD should be a tribute to Jimmy Day. We were at the 2001 show in St. Louis when Jeff and Hal Ruggs closed the show Sunday afternoon. Jeff did a tribute number to Jimmy Day. It brought tears to my eyes, it was so beautiful. There were some gremlins in the sound system before they got started. Must have been Jimmy playing a prank on Jeff. Just like at Jeff's Jam at the /95 show. Jeff was using a mic. on stage, so Jimmy asked for the mic. He then put it in his pack-a-seat and the show went on mic-less. We picked up Hal's 2 CDs, and John Hughey's 2 CDs, which we thoroughly enjoy. Now it's Jeff's turn to crank out a couple with a great backup band.

I'd like to see Jeff do a CD of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard west coast type stuff in that style and his own. He did a series of articles in the PSGA Newsletter a few years back called "Moon Eared". He really nails that stuff and I'm a die hard Ralph Mooney fan. I'll bet he could take that stuff and put his own twist to it where it'd sound like west coast stuff by still sound like Jeff....
