WHAT'S a.......chaser?
Reading over some old material on Jerry Byrd and in several of JB's albums.....(remakes) there term "chaser" is asterisc marked by tunes NEVER BEFORE HEARD by these ears.
What does the term "chaser" mean, exactly?

Thanks to both Joey and Jack.
A question for Jack: Jerry gave me a "six pack" of tunes that were not for release...
many years ago. These, he said at the time, were for DJ's also. "Over the Waves" a different version than his Mercury record, and five other tunes were on this six pack.
Would these likely by the same tunes JB put on his re-release albums??? I can't find my play list at the moment and can't remember what tunes were in the six pack.

... and if the singer just finishes, waves and walks off without music is that called playing it "Straight, No Chaser"?

ray:
the tunes you refer to ("over the waves" and others) were most likely those released circa 1960 on an LP entitled "Just a Minute" on the Sesac label. This LP was not sold at retail, but distributed to radio stations.
it contains 16 instrumental tunes running about 1 minute each, intended for use by DJs as theme music or "chasers".
musicians include byrd, billy byrd, walter haynes, shot jackson, etc.
the titles are hilo, dobro chimes, red wing, mansion over the hilltop, rustic dance, sweet betsy from pike, the bird in one, traveling on, over the waves, i'll cry again tomorrow, i get happy, run boy run, hillbilly heaven, seeing nellie home, on top of old smokey. and i'll fly away.
i would guess jerry is on only some of them. haven't played it in a long time.
considering they only run a minute each, i doubt if they have appeared on other jerry byrd commercial releases.

These are the chasers I am aware of that Jerry did. All are a part of the Anthology Series tapes and can be obtained from Scotty or Tom Bradshaw. On the tape This 'n' That are the chasers "Travelin' On, On Top Of Old Smokey, Rustic Dance, and I'll Cry Tomorrow". On tape Cincinnati Blues; "Sweet Betsy From Pike, Over The Waves and the chorus to Hilo March".
