Well... My guess is Norm Hamlett. Merle's first #1 was "Lonesome Fugitive", and that was in 1967. The song was actually recorded in 1966 and the best that I can tell only 7 more songs were released as singles that Ralph Mooney would've recorded on during which Merle got his second #1, which was "Branded Man". The best I can tell Merle's 3rd #1 was "Sing Me Back Home" which was one of the songs recorded in Norms's first session with Merle. That would mean the rest of Merle's 30 something #1's would've had Norm playing on them.

The reason I'm guessing Norm instead of John Hughey is that I'm not sure how many of Conway's early #1's had John playing on them. If I remember correctly, Lloyd was on a few of them.

The information that I have listed about Merle and Norm was taken from the booklet contained in the "Untamed Hawk" box set.

Geez, Dave you might have a point there, you know I would never have thought of it.
John Hughey started showing up on Conway's hits in 1968, now Conway had some pretty good chart movers from 1969 well into the 1970s.

When you consider that it's "recorded on the most number 1 songs by the same artist"
I'm curuious as to who Weldon and Lloyd have continually worked with while they scored hits, I suppose Lloyd with Charlie Pride is a good one.

If somebody has the motivation you could probably come up with a fairly accurate answer. There is a book of the number 1 country hits over the past fifty years. You would have to find out who played on each number one and correlate that data...Pete

I asked the question hoping someone could answer it. I was just merely speculating on who I thought it was. According to what I've read, Merle has had 39 #1's. His first 2 had Ralph Mooney playing on them and I'm assuming that the other 37 had Norm at the steel. Considering that Merle and Conway are right at the top of the "most #1's" category, I'd say that either Norm Hamlett or John Hughey would be the answer to the question. Then again, George Strait has 47 #1's... I wonder how many of them Paul played on?

I don't know if this is the answer to your question but I played on about 50 of Conways's #1 records. I don't think that Lloyd played on any of Conway's records. I know that Pete Drake played on the first 2 or 3 singles but they were not #1 records.
I played on "Next In Line" which was Conway's first #1 record and I played on all of the rest until he guit using steel on his records. After I left the band he cut one single and used Bruce Bouton on it and then
he recorded Rainy Day In Georgia, I believe
was the title, and he used Roby Turner on it.
Those are the only other steel players that he used except Lew Houston who was on 3 or 4 songs on the Next In Line album.
