I'm not a pro but I will put my two cents worth in anyway. I prefer the nickel strings. I've tried the stainless but they always seem to sound "thin". I like the bite of th classic steel guitar sound and I seem to get it with the nickel. I also like to use the fatter strings. They usually are called the Buddy Emmons set.

While I haven't used my guitar for my sole method of making a living for lotsa years, I guess I consider myself a "pro," and as such, would tell you that I always used nickel in the old days, but for the last several years, originally on the suggestion of longime friend Bobbe Seymour, I have used Cobra Coil strings, and am very satisfied.
