Shobud Fingertip Restoration Progress

Post by William Baldwin »

Fingertip restoration completed.
Refinished in original nitrocellulose lacquer, new undercarriage with extended knee levers.
I love working on them more than actually playing them lol.

William, that is some excellent work, on both the wood finish and the metal work. Simply awesome ! I love the multi position bellcranks. An extreme improvement over the original 2 hole versions.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words.
It's always an enjoyment when you can turn your passion into a job.

As for the decal, the original was missing, so a replacement was purchased.
The guitar was in very rough shape, especially the finish.
Pieces of the purfling was either broken or missing, so I had to either piece it together, one small sliver at a time, or make a replacement.

That's some real nice work! I would have expected a new decal to be more white than it appears in the photos. Looks really "correct" for the guitar's age. I've often thought about refinishing my Pro II, but was always concerned about how new decals would look.

That is, quite possibly, the most beautiful pedal steel I've ever seen. The wood and refinish are total knockouts. Good luck finding that quality of wood now. Fantastic looking undercarriage. You have really outdone yourself.

10+ years ago, I found an old Fingertip at the pawn shop across from Bobbe Seymour's shop in Hendersonville. I had every intention to restore it, but I just never had the time to get to it, and sold it to a forum member a couple of years ago. If that one gets half the restoration you've done here, it will be great.
