Day setup question

Post by Ryan Forster »

Having a bit of a problem trying to figure out the best configuration for adding 3 knee levers to my ‘50s Sho Bud D9 permanent pedal steel. I have it in the “Day” pedal setup which I really like as it makes sense for my ankle rotation being most comfortable there.
Now I am trying to find the best placement for each change. Due to the limitations of these old permanents a lower can really only go on my LKR lever or the RKR side but it is quite crowded on that right side to fit one in with the switcher and electronics in the way so I am going to try and avoid a lever there. I am thinking I will have:
LKL f#+G
LKR E-Eb
RKL E-F
I know it’s not ideal to have the E Lower on that knee in the Day setup but don’t have a ton of options as the mechanics of the crossshaft underneath will only lower on the right side (raises on the left) if that makes sense. Wonder if someone has any advice?

There is nothing wrong with that setup. As a day player, I prefer E to F on LKR, but having it on the right knee is perfectly acceptable, and preferred by some.

That’s good to hear on the E-F lever but what about having to put the E lower on the LKR? Is that doable, I know you got to use the B pedal with it a lot so not sure if it will work. Just really want to avoid having to put it on the RKR due to the lack of room.

You don't want the E lowers on LKR on a Day setup. It is used a lot with the B pedal, and bending your ankle to the left when letting off the A pedal while keeping your foot on the B pedal makes your knee want to move to the left. If E lowers were on LKR, you knee would want to go left, but you would have to force the knee to the right. Very uncomfortable. I believe some do set up their levers "backwards". I just don't think it would work for me.

You are going to have a rough time playing Day setup with the E lowers on LKR. As much as I know you hate it, my suggestion would be to convert it to Emmons pedals setup if that is even possible on that Perm.

It might be easier to acclimate to the Emmons setup than to fight that E lower arrangement all the time.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll see first if I can get the lever on the RKR in order to keep the day setup but if not I’ll have to switch it over to emmons. Even though they’re called permanents you have a lot of options as long as you don’t mind the rods not being perfectly straight. Was just hoping to keep the day setup but I’m sure it won’t take long to get used to the emmons

Cheers
