Restringing a Fuzzy Excel S-10 (keyless)?

Post by Noah Levy »

Hi all,
I have a pretty new Fuzzy S-10 (about two years old), and was looking to restring the entire guitar, but I am finding it far more difficult than expected. I was having difficulty with the high G# (which is a common problem, as far as I can tell), but I was also generally struggling through the whole process, and making a mess. Long story short, there are currently no strings on the guitar, and instead of wasting more strings, I figured I might as well come here for some sound advice from those who know far more than I do. I saw a post from a few years back asking a similar question, and while it was somewhat helpful, I think the design might have changed. The website has a short guide, but the design also appears to differ from what I have. I will include some photos to show what I am dealing with. I don't think there is anything to do at the keyhead except fit the ball end into the slot, since there are no pegs or nuts on that side. Everything seems to be done at the changer end with Allen and/or tuning wrenches. I was wondering if anyone familiar with the newer design could explain the restringing process to me, or if anyone could lend me any tips. Maybe someone even has a video or photos from the process. Anything would be much appreciated, as I enjoy the guitar's weight, tone, look, etc, and hope to bring it back into action soon. Please let me know if more images are needed or if any additional information might help. Thanks very much, everyone!

Take care,
Noah

I understand that you're having some difficulty changing the strings on your Exstar model, and I’d be happy to help.

If you haven’t seen it already, may I kindly ask you to take a look at a previous post I made regarding this?

On Exstar models, depending on the production period, the tuning peg screws may be either right-hand or left-hand threaded. If you're unsure which type you have, please turn the screw carefully and observe. Forcing the screw when it has reached its limit can result in damage.

Shoji's advice got me in the right direction too! I've also found I need to have a little more slack in the string when initially winding it on the peg than I expected, in order to get enough wrap. With about three wraps, the strings stay nice and snug. It's a little hard to understand the process at first, but once you get it, you appreciate just what a "superb" design it is! It works really well.
