Any modern pedals steels with wider string spacing?

Post by Tim Bennett »

Are there any modern pedals steel manufacturers that make an instrument with string spacing closer to the old sho buds?

I have a late '70s LDG that I find an absolute joy to play. I also have a stage one that I fly with and play when I need something light. It's great, but I am finding the difference in string spacing annoying, especially as I also play Dobro which has spacing closer to the sho bud.

The stage one I believe has 11/32 spacing - something like 8.5mm by my measurements, where as my Dobro and sho bud are more like 9.5mm (I'm Australian, inches make my head spin).

Anyway it would be really nice to be able to pick up a new steel guitar one day that has string spacing closer to my sho bud. If it doesn't exist that's fine, I'll just keep an eye out for a late model pro 1 :D

This question has been asked before, but I couldn't see it asked for the last 10 years or so. So maybe it's changed.

The newly revived Sho~Bud brand (formerly Jackson) has string spacing the same as the older Sho~Buds. Also, Show Pro steel guitars. If you need an under-50-lb budget instrument for fly dates, consider the Early Bird guitar Show Pro is building. It would be a suitable instrument for flying to jobs and still have the same string spacing as your trusty old LDG.

Williams has built 2 guitars for me with wider string spacing......one is a D6 3&4 with 13/32 at the bridge and the other is an S8 8&5 with 3/8 at the bridge.......I once contacted Jackson (Sho-Bud) and they said that they could make a wider string spacing for me, but I decided that I wanted keyless.......

The Williams I had years ago had wider spacing. Which proved to be the opposite challenge for me as I'm spoiled to narrow. 🙂

Howard, that's a an absolute beautiful work of art! 🙂

In my youth, I had a Gibson lap steel which had wider string spacing.
Then I went with a Fender Stringmaster with narrower string spacing.
After I got used to the Fender I found it hard to go back to the wider spacing on the Gibson.
