Mullen G2 3rd. string breakage

Post by Jerry Berger »

I just bought a Mullen G2. It's a great steel but I'm having problems with the third string breaking. I am using SIT strings but I have broken two of them in the past three days. The third string is the .011 PG gage. I couldn't see any burrs on the tuning key hole. Should I avoid wrapping the string over the hole? I would appreciate any help that I could get. Thanks

I use a 12 for my third. My G2 never breaks strings, regardless of the brand I use. I’ve never used SIT, though.

Jerry, I had the same problem with my Mullen G2 a while back. Check out my reply on the following thread to see how I corrected it:

Hi Doug,
I just put a 12 gage string on and kept it away from the tuning peg hole. I'll see how that works. I won't know until tomorrow since I'll be away from home tonight. I'll let you know how it works out tomorrow. Thanks

Are you winding on the tuning key like the instructions on the Mullen website? If not, take a look.

I don't use that much string. I do have the string wrapped four times on the back side of the shaft hole. That's all the string that I use.

Both strings broke at the tuning peg.

I had the exact same thing happening and I think it was the way I wound it to the tuning peg. Perhaps take a look at how you’re winding it.

If you use enough wraps, it doesn't matter.
Remember, NO LESS than 7 wraps on the first four strings.
That's always worked for me. ;-)

Here’s how I fixed the 3rd string breakage problem on my Mullen G2. Wrap one time around on the inner side and many wraps on the other side, as shown in the picture. I’ve changed my strings several times since I started doing this and haven’t broken a 3rd string.

And this method will put the 3rd string directly in line with the slot in the nut (for the 3rd string) on my Mullen S-10, single body.

It looks like I took care of the problem. No string breakage after playing several times. :D
I want to thank all of you guys for your input. My picking hand has almost completely healed from the broken strings hitting it!
