Once upon a time there was a wanna-be steel guitar picker......who, on occasion, was known to hide behind a vinegar barrel in his parents store. Rumor has it that the family never got to go watch a parade as this little fellow didn't like marching bands. This same little tyke, if enmeshed in a battle of wits with his parents, would hike off to his friends house and tell them that he wanted to move in with them. He paid for his very first quality, electric steel guitar by writing down tableture for his favorite music store owner/teacher. The kid had Red Hair and if he had't become a talented musician, he likely would have become a commercial artist or radio repairman

Ray,

It sounds like your Idol, Jerry Byrd. Since his parents didn't want their children to be musicians. They wanted their children to have legitimate jobs.

Jerry once told the story at the ISGC of how he practiced his acoustic steel guitar in the bathroom, because the echo made his mistakes easier to hear and then he could correct them. For this reason he said his parents wanted to have him put in an institution.
Now we know what it takes to become the
"Master of Touch and Tone.

Ray, I hope you have 2 bathrooms in your house, otherwise your wife is going to be upset with you.

Larry......or anyone else: How might one write to Les Paul these days? He is still living, correct?
He once had a recording of "Swiss Woodpecker" that I'm trying to get a copy of and am having no luck whatsoever.
Suggestions?

Ray,
Last I heard Les was playing a small club in NYC, so I assume he's living there, but that's all I know.

One of the few advantages

of living in Kalamazoo in the 70s and 80s was that Gibson brought a lot of interesting folks to town. I used to hang out with a local guitar maker/repairman and folks like Bill Lawrence and Les Paul would just stop by to talk.

I'd suggest you ask Lampert or Hoffnar or Jon Light or someone else who lives in or around the city.

Les Paul lives in Mahwah, New Jersey. I was there on business a couple years ago and someone pointed out his house on our way to dinner.

The club where Les plays every Monday is Iridium Jazz Club, in Manhattan near Lincoln Center.
