The Doctor of Steel
The steel and Dr. Hugh Jeffreys, his new CD titled "The Dr. of Steel".....No doubt very different, but the steel playing is excellent on all phases of the album. The chord progressions are mostly 5 note variety and musically correct, his single string speed is absolutly amazing. The arrangments are his own, he writes all the parts and plays great bass and guitar on these 11 pop tunes from the big band era.
Every musician has their favorites and we always support them regardless of their style. I first met Hugh down in Meridian, MS. I was 14 years old playing a 6 string lap steel, he was playing a double 8 string. Back then he was just great. Always willing to help others, showing us all how it was done. I knew then he was way ahead of the times.
Listen closely to the tunes. They are all good, I especially like "Tenderly" , the last 30 seconds on that tune is worth the price of the album. FANTISTIC STEEL DOCTOR!!!!

Well, many, many thanks to you Barney and Al. I have a birthday comming up this month, and there's only one thing that I'm too old for: getting the Big Head. I still play for my own amazement, and enjoy it more than ever. As for malpractice ins., well I doctor only my own steel (and there were times when I really screwed it up, but when you take one apart, you learn more about it). As for malpractice ins. for poor steel playing, I always try to avoid sour notes lest I wind up in jail for causing neighbors' deafness---after all, one never knows what the "hard-hitting" lawyers are "liable" to come up with. My Best to all----Hugh

Reggie,
When you hear that new CD "Doctor of Steel" pay close attention to the chords. He writes all that stuff and its very different from anything you've ever heard before!! Hugh Jefferies is one fine player!
Reggie thanks for the invite back to Tickfaw. For the unfortunates that have never been there its located just off I-55 about 6 miles N. of Hammonds, LA. The music hall has major gospel groups plus a fine staff band and good gourmet food on Friday and Sat, nights. The jam session before the show is just great. Bill Burns, Ron Smith, you and especially your Dad playing that pedal steel is the part I look forward too. Thanks again for the invite!!

I have Hugh's CD. I am always curious when someone plays the old Big band tunes that I used to play .
His playing is excellent. He definitely is a good musician.
The band background could be more subdued. I think the steel could have been louder.
I think he was using an Echoplex or something on some of those fast runs, I'm not sure.
All in all an unusual and different performance, than what is usually played......al

Hey Bob,
I was very fortunate to play dobro on that "Bailey Jester" CD. Matt Jordan and Young Hines wrote 9 of the 12 tunes. These guys are from Griffen. They have a studio down there. Real Hi tec. You can pull it up on WYAY.com or Baileyjester.com and give it a listen. All acustic and very clean. See you at the retunion.
