Ernie, A few years ago Lynn O. phoned me and said he was coming to Ft Worth and he was bringing me something. When they drove into the motel I was watching out the window and he stepped off of the bus with a package wrapped in newspaper. He came in and handed it to me rather gently. He said this came from Hazard County, the same stuff Shot used to get.It was a quart jar of amber colored moonshine and when you shook the jar a tornado would spin around inside. I actually still have 4-5 oz of the stuff. Uhhh I just use it for medicinal purposes and snakebite. regards, fred

Fred,
You must spend a lot of time looking for snakes. Image

In '78 or '79 I was in Nashville recording with a band (that never made it, what a surprise!) and my old Sho-Bud volume pedal's pot froze up. The bandleader suggested taking it into Shot's shop and having a new pot put in it. I was young and pretty much in awe of everything and everyone in Nashville so when we walked in and Shot and Buddy were sitting on the couch, even tho Buddy looked up and gave a big smile as we came in, all I could manage to say was something like "howya doin'?" What could I say to Buddy Emmons? Now I'm not so young but like anyone with any sense, still in awe of Mr. Emmons. If I could ask him anything, it would likely be the unanswerable question: "What's it like to be YOU?" Buddy, if you read this, PLEASE WRITE A BOOK!

BTW, Buddy did the steel track and a great solo (of course) on the previous record by this band I was in Nashville with. Imagine how much fun for me trying to follow THAT...

Buddy...Got a pit of them in the back yard..actually when we get the urge I hold the gun on Moon while he drinks and then he in turn points it at me until I drink.. works out quite well. A serious question Buddy,..the Moon says that you and a couple of other coconspirators would come to where he was playing and pick his homemade steel up and shake it to let the legs drop off and then you guys would lay down and roll with laughter. I would like to have seen that...regards,fred

Re: "Coyote Ugly" story. Dennis, it was me that started that rumor, because I was there. Buddy played Cedar Rapids with Ray Price and yes he did break his ankle from an unwise jump. I had made arrangements the night before to see him the next day and when I got to his Holiday Inn room , he was in bed with his foot all bandaged. You talk about lovin' to pick, he had me lay his steel on his lap and he played to my acoustic rthym for more than an hour until Price came in th check on him. I have a cassette of his licks and comments. Dale Thomas cthomas@avalon.net

I heard about it many years ago. Wasn't sure who told me? The reason for the jump is probably a best kept secret. If he was able to play his guitar in bed, then he still had both arms intact. This eliminates the possibility that he was in awe, chewed one off, left it on the pillow and jumped out the window as the sun was rising!

I guess after 25 years it is now ok to confess to some mischief.....
Midafternoon one day I met Buddy Emmons and Charlie Dick at Tootsie's, they were having a large time!I told them that I was headed for ShoBud to indulge in some of Shot's liquid happiness and just hang out...
Shot had showed me a gallon of some horrible white lightnin earlier in the day and had also showed me how to shake the jug and look for the little beads of oxygen that form at the liquid level in the jug...if these beads dont form this is some terrible shine...and this jug was beadless!!!!
I got back to ShoBud and told Shot that his dear friends Charlie and Buddy were coming over for a taste of that good ole shop whiskey, he said let's put a couple of drops of Palmolive dishwashing liquid in the jug so when they shake it a beautiful bead will form and they will know that it is top quality....they came, they drank, they stayed, and Shot was able to clean up their act for a while, both agreed that it was fine, even Shot and I had to join them when the Henry McKenna ran out....now I wonder...whose guitar was Shot building that night??? Image

....that ole shop whiskey was purty good, especially late in the day!!!!

When Jimmy Day introduced me to Ray Price In Colorado Springs on Ray's bus, Ray offered to pour me a drink from his huge glass jar with a hand written sign on it saying "Jump Start". I then said, "Well Ray, that jar is about half empty and I wonder if anyone in the band had gone blind yet?" Ray said no one had gone blind or vision impaired. So I robustly told him, "Well, I'll have one with you then!" One of my more memorable drinks I can honestly say. Another memorable drink(or should I say drinks!) was at the "Cruise Room" in the Oxford Hotel in Denver with Buddy Emmons. Buddy and Albert Lee knocked everyone out the next night at the Paramount with the Everly Bros.!!!
